Egypt’s Suez Canal Hub to Witness the Development of a Waste-to-Hydrogen Project

Potential adopters will enjoy lower prices than the price of current grey hydrogen energy.

The waste-to-hydrogen project will supply 300,000 tons of green hydrogen per year at 50% of the Levelized cost of existing production technologies for green hydrogen. This development was substantiated following the approval of the General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone to H2 Industries (a US energy company) to develop a 1GW Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier -  LOHC Hydrogen Hub at the East Port-Said in Egypt.

The development bears enormous importance for Egypt as it seeks out greener energy sources. The hydrogen plant for the project will reduce the amount of organic waste and non-recyclable plastic in circulation by 4 million tons as that quantity is planned to be used as feedstock in the waste-to-hydrogen transformation process. Also, it presents an economic and social opportunity for the country to generate increased revenues and protect the environment and its water resources from harmful waste pollutants. Further, electricity is expected to improve in Egypt as the waste heat from the H2 Industries process generates electricity using turbines and generators.

H2 industries intend to commercialize more Waste-to-Hydrogen projects to meet end-user needs in the coming months, following a multimillion-dollar investment. The corporation will also convert existing fossil-fuel-powered units to hydrogen power plants.
