Malawi's government and developers - Quantel Renewable Energy, Frontier Energy, and Vidullanka Plc - have begun construction of a new $65 million solar project. The project is located on a 105-hectare plot in the Ulalo Nyirenda neighbourhood. The construction of the project will last for a year before commissioning. ‌‌

The 50 MWP capacity power plant will sell electricity to the Malawian state-owned utility under its public-private partnership (PPP) agreement. The project advances Malawi's 532 MW clean energy capacity and moves it closer to achieving its goal of reaching 1,000 MW by 2025.‌‌

The Malawian government remains hopeful that more Independent Power Producers (IPP) will be encouraged to increase its installed power capacity and diversify its power mix. This is on the back of several clean energy projects which have been and are being built in several Malawian locations such as Nkhoma Deka, Golomoti, Salima.
