Neoen, a French independent power producer (IPP), has officially commissioned a 41-megawatt Metoro solar energy facility in Mozambique. The project, which was launched in October 2020 by Mozambican President H.E. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, will begin operating in a few weeks, giving much-needed electricity to the national grid. The project was financed by a €40 million loan obtained from Proparco, the French Development Agency's private sector financing division.

The solar energy project, located in Cabo Delgado's north-eastern region, comprises 121,500 solar panels that cover 138-hectare land. The project was developed by Efacec Power Solutions, a Portuguese energy and engineering company.

Over the next 20 years, the solar project would power around 175,000 Mozambican houses, feeding into the national grid while reducing 49,000 tons of carbon emissions annually, courtesy of a power purchase deal with Mozambique's state-owned utility Electricidade de Mocambique.
